Jennie Lee

Jennie Lee, was elected MP for Cannock Chase in 1945 and was appointed Minister for the Arts in 1964, as part of Harold Wilson’s government. In this time, she published ‘First Steps’– the white paper for the arts (1965), striving for high quality arts to reach the everyday person. This also led to the expansion of the Arts Council England to begin work in the regions.

Lee was also pivotal in founding the Open University, producing another White Paper in 1966 to develop plans. Through her determination, the Open University began accepting students in 1970, and continues to this day.

Over the past years, we have spoken to some of our local Councillors who worked with Lee, whilst she was an MP for our area. One of our favourite stories is of her returning to Hednesford just to eat her favourite egg and chips after the Royal Ballet!
