Photographic Collection

With over 4,000 photographs, postcards, and photograph albums, the collection documents the visual history of Cannock Chase, capturing the growth of towns and villages, industrial activity, community life, and the changing natural landscape. Alongside this, a rich range of artistic works—including paintings, drawings, watercolours, prints, and craftwork—reflect both traditional and contemporary creative expression, with a strong emphasis on pieces produced by local people.

Highlights include early photograph albums belonging to prominent local families such as the Hawkins, Withington, and Gilpin families, as well as images compiled by local authorities that document housing redevelopment and slum clearances. Together, these materials provide valuable insight into the social and environmental changes that have shaped the area.

A particularly notable aspect of the collection is artwork created by coal miners and their families. These works not only showcase significant artistic talent but also offer a unique and powerful reflection of the region’s industrial heritage and the lived experiences of its communities.
